We honour Sanskrit as the foundation of India’s linguistic, literary, and cultural heritage.
The Sanskrit Department at Lucknow Public School blends tradition with modern pedagogy to keep this ancient language vibrant and relevant. Our classrooms are equipped with interactive smart boards, audio tools for pronunciation practice, e-text libraries of classical works, and grammar reference resources. Collections include the Vedas, Upanishads, epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, classical plays, subhashitas (wise sayings), and Sanskrit dictionaries. Multimedia recordings and chanting sessions help students appreciate correct pronunciation, rhythm, and meaning.
We follow a structured, progressive approach to mastering the language. In the Lower School, the emphasis is on learning the Devanagari script, basic vocabulary, and simple grammar rules, along with recitation of shlokas. In Years 7 and 8, students begin reading short stories, poems, and excerpts from classical plays, while developing basic translation and composition skills. By Year 9 and beyond, learners engage with advanced grammar, in-depth analysis of literature, philosophical texts, and original composition, preparing for board exams and higher studies in Sanskrit or related fields.
Applied learning remains central to our teaching. Students take part in dramatisations of Sanskrit plays, shloka recitations, and script-writing exercises. Translation work between Sanskrit and modern languages strengthens comprehension and linguistic adaptability. Research projects explore themes such as the influence of Sanskrit on world languages, ancient scientific knowledge, and the preservation of texts.
The department actively organises co-curricular activities like recitation competitions, subhashita debates, and Sanskrit drama performances. The Sanskrit Sabha hosts Sanskrit Diwas celebrations, guest lectures by scholars, and interactive storytelling sessions that explore mythological and historical narratives.
Corridor displays feature students’ calligraphy works, manuscript replicas, translated verses, and illustrated stories from epics. Audio recordings of recitations are archived digitally, making them accessible for revision and appreciation.
Through Sanskrit, LPS instils not just linguistic proficiency but also an understanding of India’s cultural ethos. Students develop memory skills, clarity of expression, and a sense of identity rooted in heritage. The department’s goal is to ensure that every learner appreciates Sanskrit as a living, timeless treasure that inspires thought, values, and creativity.
